42nd Niigata City Marathon 2026

The 42nd Niigata City Marathon returns on Sunday, 11 October 2026 as one of Niigata's major annual sporting events. The headline 42.195K marathon uses a World Athletics-certified and Japan Association of Athletics Federations-approved course, starting in front of Denka Big Swan Stadium and finishing at Niigata City Athletic Stadium. The route is designed to showcase the character of this Sea of Japan port city, taking runners through central Niigata and its waterfront landscape, including the Shinano River corridor and the historic Bandai Bridge area.

The marathon and 10.6K Fun Run both start at 08:30 JST. The marathon has a seven-hour race window, finishing at 15:30, while the Fun Run closes at 10:20. A separate Universal Run operates from 09:00 to 10:40 on a 2K loop between Furumachi Crossroads and the east end of Bandai Bridge, allowing participants to choose their own distance within the session. The 10.6K and Universal Run are described here rather than being forced into ARC distance fields that do not accurately match their formats.

Marathon and Fun Run participants are seeded into start blocks using their declared expected finish times. Chip timing is recorded at regular points through the marathon, including every 5K, the half-marathon split and the finish. Organisers warn that some blocks may take around 20 minutes to cross the start line after the gun. Course cut-off points are enforced for safety and traffic management.

Race-day logistics are designed around the point-to-point course. Organisers transport the approved baggage bag from the start venue to the finish, and free shuttle buses operate from JR Niigata Station to Denka Big Swan before the race and from the finish back to Niigata Station or the start precinct afterwards. Domestic runners receive their bib, timing chip, participant guide, selected participation gift and baggage bag by post in late September. RunJapan entrants do not receive the pre-race postal pack and instead collect materials at the organiser's reception venue on the day before the race.

General entry closed on 30 June after applications exceeded the event's 12,000-runner recruitment target. The marathon fee was JPY 12,500. The separate 10.6K Fun Run fee was JPY 7,700 but is not mapped to an inaccurate ARC distance.
