Event Detail
Shimanami Surround returns to Hiroshima Prefecture on Sunday 30 May 2027 as a distinctive long-distance maranic across Japan's Setouchi islands. Rather than staging a conventional timed race for podium places, the organisers emphasise the journey: meeting communities, moving at a considered pace, tasting regional food and appreciating the bridges, citrus orchards and sea views of the Shimanami Kaido area.
Three island journeys
All routes start and finish at Setoda Civic Hall on Ikuchijima (Ikuchi Island), Onomichi. The 23 km course explores Ikuchijima, the 60 km course extends onto Innoshima, and the 100 km course adds Mukojima. The 2027 programme sets participation limits of 750 for 23 km, 350 for 60 km and 350 for 100 km. The organisers list 4, 11 and 16 aid stations, respectively. These are three distances within one event, not separate festival editions. ARC currently has a structured 100K distance option but not exact 60K or 23K options; the latter two are therefore documented here rather than mislabelled.
Race-day planning
The published timetable lists 05:30 starts for 100 km and 60 km, with the 23 km starting at 10:00. The scheduled finish deadlines are 21:00, 17:00 and 15:00, respectively. A 100 km-only drop-bag service is planned for the Mukohigashi aid station at approximately 54.7 km. Entrants must carry a phone with backup power, proof of health insurance and a reusable cup or bottle. The longer 100/60 km categories additionally require a light and rear-facing reflective material or light. Check the organiser's final safety rules before arriving.
Getting there and entry
The organisers list advance race-pack collection the previous afternoon and early-morning collection on race day. Paid shuttles are planned from Mihara Station at 03:15 and Onomichi Station at 03:45, reaching Setoda Civic Hall around 04:30. Return travel, free event parking and baggage storage are also described. Shuttle bookings are separate from race entry.
The organiser identifies RUNNET as the online registration provider, but the 2027 entry period is still being finalised. Follow the official race website for the opening date rather than assuming places are available. Each participant is promised an event-original tote bag and digital completion certificate. Part of entry revenue supports the Setouchi Olive Foundation, reflecting the event's reusable-cup and low-waste approach.
