The SPOT Gen4 is a compact satellite GPS messenger for trail runners, hikers and ultrarunners travelling beyond reliable mobile coverage. It uses the Globalstar satellite network to transmit location-based messages and is a one-way device, so it cannot receive replies.
Its dedicated SOS control can send the user’s GPS location to an emergency coordination service. Separate Check In, Custom Message and Help functions send pre-programmed updates to nominated contacts, while motion-activated tracking records progress at the interval supported by the selected service plan. An active SPOT subscription is required for messaging, tracking and SOS functions, and coverage or surrounding terrain can affect successful delivery.
SPOT lists the device at 142 g with lithium batteries, with an IP68 dust and water-resistance rating. It runs on four AAA lithium or supported NiMH rechargeable batteries; the manufacturer rates one lithium set for up to 1,250 Check In and Custom Messages. A strap, carabiner, Micro USB cable and batteries are included.
The US$149.99 price is SPOT’s official US device price checked on 23 October 2026. Service-plan and activation costs are separate. This is manufacturer-sourced desk research, not hands-on testing.
