Do You Have the Strength to Face Two of Hong Kong’s Most Challenging Trail Races in Two Consecutive Days? To earn the title of the Ninth Dragon, participants must complete 139.6 kilometers of mountain trails stretching from west to east and north to south in the New Territories of Hong Kong. Moreover, they must ascend over 8,078 meters across some of the region’s most stunning mountains.
Legend has it that the name Kowloon was given in 1278 by Emperor Bing of the Southern Song Dynasty. Observing the eight hills surrounding Kowloon—including Kowloon Peak, Tung Shan, Tate’s Cairn, Temple Hill, Unicorn Ridge, Lion Rock, Beacon Hill, and Crow’s Nest—the emperor referred to them as the “Eight Dragons”. However, a clever courtier reminded him that the emperor himself was also a dragon, thus making it the “Nine Dragons”.
