Event Detail
Tawang Marathon returns for its fourth edition on 24 October 2026, bringing a major high-altitude road-running programme to Tawang in Arunachal Pradesh's Eastern Himalayas. The event is staged at roughly 10,000 feet above sea level and is listed by the Association of International Marathons and Distance Races (AIMS). It is organised under the aegis of the Government of Arunachal Pradesh and the Indian Army, with event management by VAS Coreworks LLP. Current launch material indicates more than 4,000 runners are expected, including a substantial elite field from India and overseas.
All four races start and finish at the Gyalwa Tsangyang Gyatso High Altitude Stadium. The programme comprises a 42.195 km marathon, 21.0975 km half marathon, 10 km and 5 km road race. Flag-offs are scheduled for 05:30, 05:45, 06:10 and 07:00 IST respectively. Published course limits are seven hours for the marathon, three hours 30 minutes for the half marathon, two hours for 10K and one hour for 5K. Current organiser route graphics underline the demands of the mountain setting, listing elevation gains of about 3,274 ft for the marathon, 1,850 ft for the half, 1,072 ft for 10K and 524 ft for 5K.
Altitude is a major part of the race challenge rather than a minor travel consideration. The organiser advises full and half marathon entrants to reach Tawang at least seven days before race day to acclimatise to the reduced oxygen levels. Runners are encouraged to build up activity gradually, stay hydrated and rest properly. Indian citizens who live outside Arunachal Pradesh also require an Inner Line Permit to travel to Tawang, while foreign nationals require a Protected Area Permit, so travelling participants should arrange the relevant permit well before the event.
The 2026 event has a total prize pool of INR 65 lakh across the four distances and multiple age groups. Overall marathon prizes are INR 300,000, 200,000 and 150,000 for the first three men and women, with substantial awards also published for the half marathon, 10K and 5K. Registration is scheduled to close on 10 October 2026. Exact race-pack collection timing and venue were not yet published in the current official material reviewed, so entrants should check the organiser's website and verified social account before travelling.
