Event Detail
The Nobeoka Nishinippon Marathon reaches its 65th edition in 2027 and remains one of Kyushu's established elite-oriented road races. The Japan Association of Athletics Federations lists the race as a men's Grade 3 event in the 2026-27 Marathon Grand Championship Series, adding national championship significance to a race long regarded in Japan as a proving ground for emerging marathoners. Past editions have attracted athletes making their marathon debuts before progressing to Olympic and international competition.
The 42.195K race starts and finishes in front of Nobeoka City Hall. The certified course runs south from central Nobeoka, joins National Route 10 and continues through Kadogawa towards Hyuga before returning north. A notable late-race feature is the Funakoshi Pass section after 30K, which has historically played an important tactical role as runners head back towards Nobeoka.
The 2027 start is scheduled for 08:35 JST. Entry is restricted to Japan Association of Athletics Federations registered athletes aged 18 or older, excluding high-school students. The event uses demanding intermediate cut-offs: 1:05 at 13K, 1:40 at 20K, 2:05 at 25K, 2:32 at 30K, 3:00 at 35K and 3:30 at 40K. This format makes the race substantially more performance-focused than a typical mass-participation city marathon.
Special-drink tables are planned near the 10K, 15K, 20K, 25K, 30K, 35K and 40K checkpoints. A medical room staffed by doctors and nurses is provided near the start and finish in the Marathon Plaza. Valuables-only baggage storage is available, and the organiser lists approximately 400 free temporary parking spaces near the venue. Nobeoka Station is about a 10-minute bus ride from the event area.
The 2027 edition is part of an important MGC season leading towards selection pathways for major international championships, reinforcing Nobeoka's traditional role in Japan's competitive marathon calendar.
