Event Detail

Kyoto Marathon 2027 is one of Japan's major destination city marathons, bringing a field of up to 16,000 marathon runners onto a point-to-point course through one of the country's most historic cities. The race starts at TAKEBISHI Stadium Kyoto in Nishikyogoku Athletic Park and finishes in front of Heian-jingu Shrine. The 42.195 km course is certified by the Japan Association of Athletics Federations and accredited by World Athletics and AIMS.

The route is designed around Kyoto's landscape and cultural identity, taking runners through the vicinity of seven World Heritage Sites and past areas including Arashiyama and the Kamo River. Runners should note that the course is not entirely conventional city asphalt: published 2027 guidance specifically warns that it includes unpaved riverside sections that can become more difficult in wet weather.

The marathon starts at 09:00 and operates on a six-hour gun-time limit, with eight traffic-control checkpoints. Runners who fall substantially behind the required pace may also be stopped between checkpoints. Start blocks are assigned using submitted recent personal-best or estimated times, with runners who provide no time placed in the final block.

Eligibility requires runners to have been born before 1 April 2008 and to be capable of completing the marathon within six hours. Wheelchair participation is handled through a separate 6.1 km race rather than the marathon field. The broader event also includes a domestic pair-ekiden, with its relay point at Kyoto Botanical Gardens.

For 2027, the event's cultural theme includes the 400th anniversary of the Kan'ei Imperial Procession. The finisher medal features Nijo Castle motifs, while the runner towel uses traditional textile-inspired design. Overseas runners who complete check-in also receive an original Kyoto Marathon furoshiki. Live race tracking is planned through Ouen-navi, and finishers can access a web completion certificate after the race.
