Event Detail
Onagawa 100 TRAILS is set to return to Onagawa in Japan's Miyagi Prefecture from Friday 5 to Sunday 7 March 2027. This demanding trail-running festival takes place in a rugged coastal town on the Sanriku shoreline, where steep forested hills rise close to the Pacific Ocean. The 2027 edition is listed by the specialist Japanese trail-running publication Trail Runner.jp, which identifies the Onagawa 100TRAILS Executive Committee as organiser.
Ultra distances and course character
The announced 2027 programme comprises 100 miles, 105 km, 70 km, 35 km and 16 km. Although the races share one event weekend, they are not separate calendar events. The 100-mile distance is the flagship test for experienced ultra runners, while the shorter trail categories provide options for runners with less time or different endurance goals. The 2027 start times, exact elevation figures and detailed cut-offs are not yet verified.
The organiser's published earlier-edition course follows steep trails based around Onagawa, including north and south loops that combine into an approximately 35.2 km circuit with about 1,800 m of climbing. On that version of the course, the north loop covers roughly 15.5 km and the south loop roughly 19.9 km; the organisers put the trail proportion at around 65%. Runners on longer distances repeated sections of the circuit. These descriptions are historical context, not confirmed 2027 route specifications. Check the new edition's official map and GPX files before preparing pacing, navigation or support plans.
Planning your entry
Onagawa's coastal location makes this an unusual Japanese mountain race, with opportunities to experience the local landscape and communities beyond a major city centre. Past editions used WACK Onagawa Stadium as the main base, but the 2027 venue, race-pack collection point, transport arrangements and exact flag-off schedule have not yet been published in an edition-specific organiser notice. Do not book travel on the assumption that previous arrangements remain unchanged.
The organiser's earlier published rules included mandatory equipment, eligibility requirements and distance-specific cut-offs. Treat those as a guide to the event's character rather than as the 2027 rulebook; equipment, age limits and qualifying experience can change between editions. Accommodation and onward travel should account for the event's rural setting, early or overnight running, and possible traffic restrictions around race facilities.
Entry status: a verified 2027 registration opening, entry portal, fee schedule, deadline and finisher entitlements have not yet been confirmed. The organiser's current website still primarily carries 2026 information. Check its new-edition updates and official social channels before paying or relying on dates beyond the confirmed three-day event window.
