Event Detail
Tokyo Marathon 2027 is one of Asia's flagship road races and part of Abbott World Marathon Majors Series XIX. The 2027 edition also serves as part of Japan's Marathon Grand Championship Series 2026-27 and as a selection race for the World Athletics Championships Beijing 2027 and the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games.
The certified 42.195 km course starts at the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building in Shinjuku and crosses central Tokyo through Suidobashi, Ueno-hirokoji, Kanda, Nihombashi, Asakusa and the Kaminarimon Gate, Ryogoku, Monzen-nakacho, Ginza, Tamachi and Hibiya before finishing on Gyoko-dori Avenue beside Tokyo Station. The course is certified by JAAF, AIMS and World Athletics, and the race carries a World Athletics Platinum Label.
The mass marathon starts at 9:10 am JST and has a seven-hour event cut-off, finishing at 4:10 pm. The wheelchair marathon starts five minutes earlier at 9:05 am and has a 2 hour 30 minute limit. Additional intermediate cut-off points operate for traffic control, security and race operations. General runners must be at least 19 years old on race day and capable of completing the marathon within 6 hours 30 minutes.
The field is capped at 40,000 runners. Entry is allocated through several pathways including ONE TOKYO membership, general ballot, charity, semi-elite and other designated categories. General entry ran from 14 to 28 August 2026, with a random draw used where applications exceeded capacity. Runners declaring an estimated finish time of three hours or faster must submit an eligible official race result for start-corral verification.
Packet pick-up is compulsory and must be completed personally at Tokyo Big Sight South Exhibition Halls before race day. Photo identification is required and proxy collection is not permitted. The accompanying Tokyo Marathon EXPO runs at the same venue from 4 to 6 March. Baggage check is available as an optional paid service. All marathon finishers receive the official finisher medal and finisher robe.
