Event Detail
The World Masters Games 2027 Kansai Half Marathon brings international age-group road racing to Kamitonda, Wakayama Prefecture, on Sunday 16 May 2027. The World Masters Games began in Toronto in 1985 and is one of the world's largest multi-sport gatherings for adult athletes. The Kansai Games, postponed from an earlier planned Japanese edition, run from 14 to 30 May with 35 sports. The half marathon has an announced capacity of 5,000 runners, including participants with disabilities.
Course and competition
The 21.0975 km race starts at 9:30 am Japan Standard Time on a special course associated with the Kishu Kuchikumano Marathon near Kamitonda Cultural Hall. The overall limit is three hours. The precise 2027 route, elevation profile, intermediate checkpoints and aid-station locations remain under review, so older course maps must not be treated as final. Competition follows World Athletics rules and local regulations, although the official sports guide says performances will not receive official record certification at these Games. Marshals can stop participants who cannot meet checkpoint times or safely continue, and runners must follow emergency instructions.
Who can enter
This is a masters event, not an unrestricted public half marathon. Runners must be at least 30 years old, born on or before 15 May 1997. Men and women compete in five-year age divisions from 30+ through 100+. Entrants declare an expected finish time. The programme accommodates visually impaired athletes who require a guide runner. Awards go to the first three men and women in each age division, with presentations on site as results are confirmed.
Entry and race-week arrangements
Applications are submitted through the Games' online entry system, with an advertised closing date of 28 February 2027, subject to earlier closure if capacity is reached. The standard athlete entry fee depends on residency rather than simply nationality and covers participation in up to five Games disciplines. The half marathon has no sport-specific surcharge.
Overseas residents must collect their bibs and timing chips at Kamitonda Cultural Hall on Saturday 15 May, 1:00–6:00 pm, or outside Kamitonda Town Hall on Sunday 16 May, 7:00–9:00 am. Japan residents are expected to receive their bibs and chips in advance by post. Race-day collection closes only 30 minutes before the start, so arriving the previous day is prudent for international runners.
Travel and safety
The official venue guidance places the hub around Asso 758-1, Kamitonda, roughly a 15-minute walk from JR Asso Station or about 30 minutes by shuttle bus from JR Kii-Tanabe Station. Accommodation and transport are the runner's responsibility. Severe rain, storms or lightning warnings can lead to cancellation. The exact starting gantry, course services and any changes should be checked against the current organiser guide before travelling.
