Tiền Phong Marathon - Điện Biên Discovery, 2026–27 festival
The Tiền Phong Marathon – Điện Biên Discovery brings a substantial road-running festival to Điện Biên Phủ in north-western Vietnam. Its race day is Saturday 2 January 2027, following associated festival activities from 31 December 2026. The registration platform labels it the 2027 event, while some organiser publicity uses the 2026 title because the programme begins on New Year's Eve.
The event is organised by Tiền Phong newspaper together with the Điện Biên Provincial Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism, under the direction of the provincial People's Committee. It is associated with the wider Tiền Phong running and national-distance-running tradition. The organisers have publicised an ambition to bring approximately 5,000 race participants to the province, plus a large community participation programme; these are projections rather than confirmed entries.
Distances and setting
Four road distances are offered: 48 km, 21 km, 10 km and 5 km. The 48 km challenge is a distinctive feature: it is not a standard 42.195 km marathon. Runners in the 21 km category must be at least 16, and 48 km entrants at least 18; the registration page lists no age restriction for the shorter distances. The 48 km category is described here but is not mapped to a misleading 50 km filter.
The organising media describes courses intended to showcase Điện Biên's heritage landscape, including the Mường Thanh valley and local historic landmarks. Specific 2027 route maps, start and finish coordinates, elevation profiles and flag-off times have not yet been published. The mapped location is Điện Biên Phủ town centre for orientation only, not a confirmed start line.
