Event Detail
Kumamoto Castle Marathon 2027 brings three road events into central Kumamoto on Sunday, 21 February 2027, with the organiser listing the programme start from 09:00 JST. The headline Historical Pilgrimage Full Marathon is a Japan Association of Athletics Federations certified 42.195 km course with a 13,000-runner capacity and a seven-hour limit. It is joined by the Kanaguri Memorial Kumamoto Nichinichi 30K Road Race, a certified 30 km event capped at 150 runners, and the approximately 3.5 km Castle Town Fun Run for 1,500 participants.
Demand for the 2027 edition is substantial. The organiser reported 25,225 applications across the three races, including 23,390 applications for the 13,000 marathon places and 1,786 applications for the 1,500 Fun Run places. Both oversubscribed races are being decided by lottery, with results scheduled for 15 October 2026. Runner applications closed on 24 September 2026.
The marathon travels through Kumamoto's city streets before finishing at Ninomaru Square inside the nationally designated Special Historic Site of Kumamoto Castle. The castle, originally built in the early 17th century and heavily damaged in the 2016 Kumamoto earthquakes, gives the finish a distinctive historical setting. The official course information confirms that both the full marathon and Castle Town Fun Run finish within the castle grounds. The 30K race honours Shiso Kanaguri, the Kumamoto-born pioneer associated with the early development of Japanese marathon running.
Race control is strict. Marathon runners have seven hours from the starting signal, while 30K competitors must reach the 28.3 km final checkpoint by 10:58 and are expected to sustain the event's published four-minutes-per-kilometre standard. The Fun Run has a 1 hour 15 minute limit and additional intermediate passage deadlines through central shopping streets.
All runners must complete in-person check-in before race day at Hanabata Square. Registration operates from 12:00 to 20:00 on Friday 19 February and 10:00 to 20:00 on Saturday 20 February. There is no race-day check-in and no proxy collection. The organiser uses facial-recognition identity verification, so entrants are required to complete the specified identification process in advance.
