Verdict
The Fitbit Charge 6 is a compact fitness tracker for runners who want everyday activity, sleep and heart-rate context alongside basic phone-free pace and distance. Built-in GPS and more than 40 exercise modes make it capable enough for routine road runs, gym work and walks, while the narrow AMOLED display keeps it less bulky than a full running watch. Its strongest fit is the runner who values general health tracking and a discreet band; athletes wanting detailed navigation, extensive training analytics or dependable long-duration GPS should compare a dedicated sports watch.
Running and training features
Charge 6 combines optical heart-rate tracking, built-in GPS and GLONASS, automatic exercise recognition, Active Zone Minutes and an intensity map in the companion app. Google Maps can provide turn-by-turn directions and Google Wallet supports contactless payments where those services and banks are available. It can also broadcast heart rate to compatible gym equipment using the Bluetooth Heart Rate Profile.
Google lists a 30 g body measuring 36.73 × 23.09 × 11.20 mm, an AMOLED display with Gorilla Glass 3 and 5 ATM water resistance for shallow-water use. Water resistance is not permanent; rinse and dry the tracker and silicone band after sweaty or wet sessions, and avoid high-velocity or hot-water activities. The box includes small and large infinity bands, covering stated wrist circumferences of 130–210 mm, plus a charging cable.
Battery life is rated at up to seven days, with a roughly two-hour full charge. Always-on display, GPS and SpO2 use shorten that figure. Independent testing by OutdoorGearLab found the Charge 6 effective for daily health tracking and shorter GPS workouts, but highlighted the small screen and GPS limitations for serious training; its test unit managed about eight hours of GPS use and just under seven days in smartwatch use. Treat those figures as reviewer results, not guarantees.
Compatibility and limitations
Current Google specifications require a Google account, Bluetooth LE, internet access and the Google Health app on a compatible phone running Android 11 or iOS 16.4 or later. Some functions need a nearby phone, supported country or paid service: YouTube Music controls require Premium, some readiness and coaching features sit behind Google Health Premium, and ECG, SpO2, Wallet and Maps availability varies by market. Health readings are informational and are not a medical diagnosis.
