Kuching Marathon is scheduled to return to Sarawak's capital on Sunday 17 October 2027, with Padang Merdeka named as the event venue. The city-centre road-running festival is organised by the Kuching Marathon Association and has grown into one of Sarawak's prominent participation races. The organiser's website reports more than 14,000 participants at its 2025 edition, illustrating its appeal to local runners and visitors from elsewhere in Malaysia and overseas.
The current official event website lists four established options: the 42.195 km full marathon, 21 km half marathon, 10 km run and 5 km run. They share the atmosphere of a central Kuching race village but cater to different levels of experience, from recreational runners to those tackling a full marathon. The 2027 category programme appears on the organiser's updated homepage, although detailed 2027 rules and start times have not yet been issued.
Course and setting
Padang Merdeka sits close to Kuching's historic centre, riverfront and accommodation district. In previous editions, the marathon loop crossed the Sarawak River and passed areas associated with the city's White Rajah history, Malay neighbourhoods and the Kuching Isthmus. The half-marathon course has previously included the Old State Mosque and established kampongs. These are historical route descriptions, not confirmed 2027 course maps; runners should check the final route and road-closure notices when the organiser releases them.
Planning for race day
Kuching's tropical conditions can be warm and humid even during early starts, so participants should prepare for heat and pay attention to official hydration and medical guidance. Padang Merdeka is in the city centre, approximately 10 km from Kuching International Airport according to the organiser's visitor information. Staying nearby can simplify early-morning access, especially when roads close.
The planned 2027 return follows the cancellation of the 27 September 2026 race because of haze, announced by the organiser on 25 September 2026. That cancellation concerned the 2026 edition; the organiser subsequently posted a fresh 'KM2027' announcement. As of early October 2026, 2027 entry fees, registration opening and closing dates, flag-off times, race-pack collection arrangements, final course maps and confirmed finisher entitlements remain to be published. Earlier-edition schedules and perks should not be treated as promises for 2027.
